Based on the memories of real-life Slovakian Holocaust survivor Lali Sokolov, it tells the inspiring story of how Lali (Jonah Hauer-King) was sent to Auschwitz in 1942, where he was made one of the tattooists charged to ink identification numbers onto fellow prisoners’ arms. Remarkably he meets Gita (Anna Próchniak) at the camp, and they fall in love against the horror of the prison they are in.
Under constant guard from a volatile Nazi SS officer Stefan Baretzki (Jonas Nay), Lali and Gita become determined to keep each other alive. Sixty plus years later, recently widowed Lali, now an elderly man (played by Academy-nominated Harvey Keitel) grieving for his wife, finds the courage to tell the world his story when he meets aspiring writer Heather Morris (Melanie Lynskey).
Two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve composed the score for the series and the series features an original song by Barbra Streisand – “Love Will Survive” – composed by two-time Oscar®-winner Hans Zimmer in collaboration with multi-Emmy nominee Kara Talve, and Grammy-winner Walter Afanasieff, with lyrics by Grammy and Golden Globe nominee Charlie Midnight, recorded by the world-class London Symphony Orchestra conducted by William Ross at Abbey Road Studios.
