Alex Sobel is the Labour and Co‑operative Member of Parliament, currently representing Leeds Central & Headingley (previously Leeds North West since 2017). Alex proudly represents Leeds and the city centre which is home to a multitude of eclectic venues as well as artists. Many years ago, Alex promoted gigs and managed bands in Leeds.
As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Music in Parliament, Alex has drawn attention to multifaceted issues facing the music industry such as touring challenges post-Brexit. Last year, he convened cross-party MPs, artists and industry leaders, urging the government to regulate AI firms to safeguard creators' rights. At this year’s Westminster Media Forum, he chaired discussions on AI, streaming and fair remuneration in the music sector. Recently, he supported a permanent cap on ticket resales to prevent fans from overpaying for gigs and festivals.
Alex has spotlighted over the years the struggles of small live venues and has called on the government for targeted support measures, including reducing business rates. He also emphasises the social value of music.
