WTF is Neuroaesthetics?

Join us to learn how the newest branch of neuroscience is changing how we feel, think and connect.

You've heard of neuroscience. You've heard of aesthetics. But put them together and suddenly we're asking some of the most exciting, and urgent, questions in design, culture and public health. How does art change our brains? How does music help us synchronise? Why do some spaces make us feel energised and others leave us cold? And what happens when we actually start measuring how our brains and bodies respond?

Neuroaesthetics is the science of how aesthetic experience shapes the mind and body, and it's  revolutionising how we think about visual design and marketing, arts spaces, cultural institutions and the built environment. Galleries, concert halls, immersive experiences and civic spaces aren't just for leisure or entertainment. They're sites of genuine healing, connection and transformation - and we now have the technologies to show it.

In a world of growing quantification, most technology hands us a verdict. Maybe your smartwatch tells you you're stressed, you didn't recover, you slept poorly. Kinda’s work offers a counterpoint to traditional data communication approaches.

Join us to explore how neuroaesthetics is being applied across sectors, starting with marketing and the built environment, and moving to arts and culture. While neuroaesthetics is informing design across all fields, the newest paradigms for emotional data visualisation are currently being pioneered in cultural design. We’ll share how these art-science approaches are changing the way we see human responses, arguing that making space for multiple ways of knowing, curiosity and interpretation is crucial to the new frontier of cultural and civic design, as a model of care.
