The Night
Gaua
Director: Paul Urkijo Alijo
Cast: Yune Nogueiras, Elena Irureta, Ane Gabarain, Iñake Irastorza
The stories of women and witches intersect in this gorgeous folk horror set in the 17th Basque Country.
In 17th Spain, everyone expected the Inquisition. Set in the harsh world of the Catholic witch-hunts, the young bride Kattalin (Yune Nogueiras) escapes from her violent new husband with a little help from a poisonous mushroom. Shrouded by the night and the woods, she stumbles upon three old women, gossiping and sharing horror stories. Unfolding in a series of horror vignettes, Gaua (‘the night’ in the Basque language), sees writer-director Paul Urkijo Alijo weave a tale of corruption, sexual liberation, and classic storytelling into a folk feminist parable that culminates in a feverish finale.
