How the American Left Learned to Speak the Internet

Fresh off Zohran Mamdani’s historic mayoral victory in New York City, this conversation explores how one of the most closely watched political campaigns in the United States defied conventional wisdom — and what it signals about the future of progressive politics globally.

Bringing together broadcaster Hasan Piker and strategist Zara Rahim, the session examines both sides of that transformation: the rise of alternative political media ecosystems and the campaigns learning how to speak within them. As one of the most influential political commentators online, Piker has built a massive global audience by translating politics through livestreaming, internet culture, humor, and direct audience engagement outside the confines of traditional television or party aligned media. Rahim, meanwhile, helped architect a campaign that understood how to operate inside this new media reality rather than fight against it.

Together, the conversation will look back at how the Mamdani campaign navigated questions around democratic socialism, economic populism, Islamophobia, Palestine, and generational frustration while building resonance across communities many believed could not coexist politically. It will also explore the broader transformation taking place inside American politics, where younger audiences increasingly distrust institutions and form political identity through creators, streamers, podcasts, and alternative media spaces.
