Description

Vulva Voce pushes the boundaries of string quartet performance, blending folk, contemporary classical, jazz and techno influences. Centered on amplifying women’s voices, they exclusively perform works by women and underrepresented artists, including original and commissioned pieces. Their innovative approach has earned them recognition from The Recording Academy and BBC Radio 3, with collaborations spanning Grammy-winning classical artists to Glastonbury headliners, Ash. In 2024, their performances included SXSW, Glastonbury Festival and WOMEX. Committed to sustainability, they completed their 2023 European tour entirely by land travel, where they played to sold out venues across Scandinavia and Germany.

Vulva Voce's debut EP 'Maddalena', is inspired by the music of Maddalena Casulana - the first woman in history to have an entire book of music published under her own name.

“I want to show the world, as much as I can in this profession of music, the vain error of men that they alone possess the gifts of intellect and artistry” - Maddalena Casulana (First Book of Madrigals, 1568)

Ah, Power of Love! and Death, What Do You Want? are two of Casulana’s original 4-part vocal works, composed in 1570 and arranged for the first time for string quartet. Vulva Voce’s original tracks, Luteal and Hysteria sample Casulana’s melodies, re-contextualising them in jazz, folk, pop and techno grooves.
