‘Touching screens, sharing memes, I wanna say I’m sorry. Here’s a bag of Percy Pigs, and some petrol station flowers’
So goes the first line from ‘modern love’, the final track from “things are gonna be alright”, vegas water taxi’s cult 2023 self-released debut album. It’s a typically sad-yet-funny line from singer/guitarist Ben Hambro (ex Lazarus Kane etc), who carries on the lineage of artists such as David Berman and Courtney Barnett, finding the joys and misfortunes of life in every mundane detail. The album is stacked full of these one liners; funny, self-aware and tragic all at the same time, Hambro’s sardonically irreverent songs tend to hit you in the middle of your chest, resonating long after the final notes have ended. The record stands as beautiful, yet jarring collection of songs, capturing the chaos and contradictions of life with a deft wryness.
The band (including core members Fred Lawton, Molly Shields and Charlie Meyrick) caught the attention of PNKSLM Recordings, who are now reissuing their debut on vinyl for the first time ever this June. They sold out London’s The Lexington at the end of 2024 and earlier this year the band performed as part of The Line of Best Fit’s Five Day Forecast as well as opening for Katy J Pearson at KOKO. The band is currently recording new music, set to be released on PNKSLM later this year.
