Jonas Åkerlund is a globally acclaimed director known for his work in feature films, documentaries, music videos, commercials, and stage productions. His innovative storytelling and visually distinctive style continually redefine the industry’s boundaries.
Most recently, Jonas directed the livestream production of Madonna’s 'The Celebration Tour' in Rio. The event attracted over 1.6 million attendees, marking Madonna's largest concert to date and setting records as the largest audience for a free stand-alone concert by any artist.
In addition to his six feature films, including the cult classic Spun, Jonas has brought his unique, stylized vision to Netflix with the creation and direction of the six-episode drama series Clark, starring Bill Skarsgård, and the graphic novel-adapted feature Polar, starring Mads Mikkelsen. Polar captivated a global audience of 130 million subscribers and secured the #1 spot on IMDb’s MovieMeter for two consecutive weeks. In 2018, Jonas’ feature Lords of Chaos, starring Rory Culkin and Sky Ferreira, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where Variety described it as “a pitch-perfect black metal dramedy.”
Jonas’ commercial work has garnered numerous accolades, including Addy, Cannes Gold Lion, and Cannes Grand Prix Awards. His groundbreaking music videos for Madonna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, U2, Rolling Stones among many others have earned multiple Grammy Awards, an Icon Award, MTV Video Music Awards, and induction into the prestigious MVPA Hall of Fame. He won his third Grammy for Best Music Film with Paul McCartney’s Live Kisses, and his work on Beyoncé’s visual album Lemonade earned both Emmy and Grammy awards. His concert films include Rammstein: Paris, Beyoncé & Jay-Z – On the Run, and Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour Live for Apple TV. He has also directed music-driven documentaries with artists such as Madonna, Paul McCartney, and Metallica in his latest film, Metallica Saved My Life , which explores the thrilling, touching and sometimes heart-breaking lives of their fan community across the world.
